Challenges We Meet

Old Mother Nature still has challenges for us to meet.  As this is written government planes are whirring over the yawning seam in the earth that is known as the Grand Canyon of the Colorado that traces of Mr. and Mrs. Hyde of Hansen may be found..
In their  attempts to conquer the turbulent stream in their homemade scow, relatives fear that the Idaho couple may have met disaster.  So a search is made in effort to discover just what has happened and to lend succor if it is needed.  Their daring may have brought them death, or they may have been marooned.  In either event the world, along with relatives, will want to know the result of the adventure.
Of what use are such daring exploits?  we can hear timid souls asking.  Of what use indeed?  No one will be the richer in dollars and cents by the success of their attempt to ride the treacherous river through its box canyon...The exploration was not made in the interest of science as we understand it.   Yet we hold firmly to the belief that these bold young people have added to the richness of life by the daring they have displayed.
Life is not a cut and dried proposition.  It may be to some few of us who live by rule and rote.   There are others who demand the more spectacular, even the dangerous, before their lives can be lived. We of sedentary habits may decry their daring and the risks they take-- unnecessary by our standards--but life would be a sorry spectacle if all of humanity were cast in the mold of the commonplace.
We ardently hope that Glen Hyde and his wife are safe.  He grew to manhood on farms on this Twin  Falls tract.  Quiet in his deportment, slow speaking, in no sense a seeker of the short-lived fame we know as notoriety, his is that mold that sees Mother Nature's big spectacles as obstacles to man's control that challenge him..The canyon of the Snake River intrigued him as a boy, we happen to know..Even so did the canyon of the Colorado.  He answered the challenge.
The desire to fly, the desire to scale mountains never before conquered by man, the desire to make speed in vehicles propelled on the earth have all been challenges.  They were answered by venturesome souls, some of whom lost their lives.  The claim that the exploit down the Colorado had slight possibility of utilitarian benefit to humanity might be made as an argument against it.  Such argument would be true enough, but the studied courage displayed in carrying out the exploit is of a sort that humanity needs, even though death be the price that is paid in exercising it.............

The Idaho Evening Times dec. 19, 1928.......  It is truly an Eloquent tribute to Glen and Bessie Hyde.  taken from  Sunk Without a Sound by Brad Dimock.....     Amazing....Live your life ....feel... , hear.., experience ......D
